Have You Heard of Meokgojeong?

Meokgojeong is a Korean BBQ specialist restaurant located in Seogwipo, Jeju Island. It’s the kind of neighborhood gem that thrives on local clientele and repeat visitors. That’s what I’d heard anyway, so I decided to check it out for myself.

Menu Selection and Quality of Meat

First thing to note: they have a two-person minimum order. So even if you’re dining solo, you’ll need to order for at least two people.

One look at the menu tells you the prices are on the steeper side. I wasn’t thrilled about the cost, but I wanted to be selective. Since the premium cuts seemed like they’d be heavy on the stomach, I ordered the galbijjim (short rib) and the seagull-cut beef—one portion each.

The restaurant clearly had my accommodation’s owner’s endorsement, and it showed. There was a steady crowd, which speaks to its reputation in the neighborhood. Being close to Olle Market in Seogwipo probably brings in decent foot traffic as well.

Let me take you around the area a bit.

Since I arrived just as the sun was setting, the neighborhood was still fairly quiet. But it won’t stay that way for long—evening service was about to pick up.

Casual dining atmosphere at Meokgojeong

The restaurant has a small courtyard and an interesting entrance layout. You can really see this is the kind of place where locals pop in regularly. Sure, tourists probably make up a good portion of the business now, but there’s definitely something homey about it.

If you’re staying at a hotel in Seogwipo, I’d recommend taking a walk out like I did and exploring these local spots. While your hotel can certainly feed you, experiencing the local atmosphere is one of the true draws of travel.

Korean soju and side dishes

Good meat pairs beautifully with a cold drink. When I visit Jeju, I usually try Hallasan, the local soju brand, but the unfamiliar taste made me stick with what I know—Jinro, a trusted choice.

The meat here is fresh and flavorful. I skipped the rice and added bibim naengmyeon (mixed cold noodles) instead—a perfect complement to grilled meat.

Final Thoughts on Meokgojeong

You could immediately tell the food was made with years of accumulated experience and skill. The fact that locals keep coming back speaks volumes.

However, there’s one thing I need to mention: a restaurant isn’t just about the food. While I understand that hiring foreign workers is often a practical necessity in Korea’s tough labor market, employing staff who haven’t picked up basic service standards or can’t communicate effectively creates real inconvenience for diners. That aspect left me feeling a bit disappointed and wishing things were different.

That said, it was a worthwhile visit to Meokgojeong.
