AFA 2026: Swarm Aero and Textron/Merlin Aircraft Concepts

AFA 2026에서 공개된 Gamera와 SkyCourier UX 무인항공기 개념

AFA 2026: Uncrewed Aircraft Race Splits Between Long-Range Strike and Autonomous Logistics

New uncrewed aircraft concepts were unveiled one after another at the Air, Space & Cyber Conference, held in National Harbor, Maryland, from September 14 to 16, 2026. Swarm Aero presented Gamera, designed for long-range strike and surveillance, while Textron Aviation and Merlin unveiled the Cessna SkyCourier UX, a concept aimed at resupplying forces in dispersed and contested environments.

Both platforms emphasize autonomy, but their intended missions are clearly different. Gamera is a long-range strike and surveillance platform designed for mass deployment, while SkyCourier UX is closer to a medium-sized logistics aircraft concept that combines the cargo capacity of an existing transport aircraft with autonomous-flight software.

Swarm Aero’s Gamera Targets ‘Low-Cost Mass Deployment’

At the conference, Swarm Aero introduced Gamera as a new type of Group 5 unmanned aircraft system. According to the company, the aircraft is being designed with an approximately 72-foot wingspan and a target range of about 9,000 nautical miles without aerial refueling, making it suitable for extended endurance and long-range operations.

According to Janes, Gamera is being designed to carry large long-range missiles, including weapons from the LRASM and JASSM-ER families. A full-scale model on display featured seven weapons or payload stations, including a centerline hardpoint. The company has emphasized a design intended to support mass production at a lower cost than existing platforms.

Gamera’s central idea is not simply to maximize the performance of a single aircraft. Swarm Aero has outlined a concept in which multiple aircraft would be operated using its own command-and-control and autonomy system, Legion. The scale of the planned fleet and the details of the operational concept, however, are expected to take shape through future testing and in response to U.S. military requirements.

First Flight Targeted for 2027

According to Shephard, Swarm Aero CEO Peter Kalogiannis said the company is building a Gamera prototype and is targeting a flight in 2027. The company sees Gamera as a potential candidate for integration with the Massed Modular Aircraft concept being pursued by the U.S. Air Force.

Rather than pursuing a traditional high-cost platform optimized for maximum stealth, Gamera emphasizes a simple design and ease of production. That approach aligns with the U.S. military’s recent shift toward uncrewed systems that can deliver long-range surveillance and strike capabilities while being procured in quantities large enough to absorb losses.

SkyCourier UX Explores the Potential of a Medium Autonomous Logistics Aircraft

Textron Aviation and Merlin unveiled the SkyCourier UX concept, combining the FAA-certified Cessna SkyCourier platform with Merlin Pilot autonomous-flight software. According to Textron Aviation, the aircraft is being evaluated for autonomous or pilot-optional operations to deliver supplies to dispersed forces and remote bases.

The current design targets a payload of approximately 6,000 pounds and the ability to carry up to three LD3 cargo containers. Designed with short runways and unpaved or otherwise austere airstrips in mind, the aircraft is intended to fill the gap between large transports and smaller uncrewed resupply systems.

Potential missions include moving essential cargo such as maintenance parts, medical supplies and equipment from major logistics hubs to small forward operating bases. By adding autonomous-flight capability to the existing SkyCourier’s cargo-handling characteristics, the concept explores how supplies could be moved within an operational area without sending crews into dangerous environments.

Autonomy That Extends to the Airframe

SkyCourier UX goes beyond simply removing the pilot from the cockpit and also considers an airframe configuration tailored to autonomous operations. To improve access to the cargo compartment, Textron Aviation presented a design concept featuring a forward-opening loading structure and additional cargo space.

According to Merlin, Merlin Pilot has undergone autonomous-flight testing on aircraft including the Cessna Caravan and Beechcraft King Air. The announcement can be seen as an effort to combine proven commercial aircraft with autonomy software and extend them into military logistics missions.

What the Two Platforms Reveal About the Direction of Uncrewed Aircraft Development

Gamera and SkyCourier UX fall within the same broad uncrewed aircraft category, but they address different markets and missions. Gamera focuses on long-range strike and surveillance, multi-aircraft operations and low-cost production to preserve combat endurance and fleet numbers. SkyCourier UX is focused on strengthening the resilience of supply networks through relatively high cargo capacity and the ability to operate from a range of airstrips.

The common trend evident in both announcements is that two development paths are advancing in parallel: adding autonomy to existing aircraft and designing platforms from the outset for mass production and uncrewed operation. Future competitiveness is likely to be judged not only by flight performance but also by production speed, reduced staffing requirements, autonomy in the event of communications loss and maintenance arrangements.

Both aircraft, however, remain at the development or concept stage. Gamera is approaching its prototype flight, while SkyCourier UX is still undergoing engineering studies and operational assessments. Whether either aircraft is adopted by the military, and what missions it ultimately performs, will depend on test results and U.S. military procurement requirements.
