The restaurant is reportedly closed on Thursdays.
Seogwipo’s main attractions are clustered together, almost like features on Shin Dong-yup’s face. Naturally, walking is often the easiest way to get around.
And when hunger strikes, a Chinese restaurant is an easy option to have in mind.
I happened to pass by Mansaseong, so I decided to give it a try.
There is a spacious car park behind the restaurant, although it is still unpaved and has a dirt surface. I told myself that was part of the Chinese atmosphere and parked anyway.
The restaurant also benefits from its convenient location near major attractions such as Cheonjiyeon Waterfall, Lee Jung-seop Street and Jaguri Coast.
What the Mansaseong Menu Says to Me
Because the restaurant is in a tourist area, the menu itself seems to have been designed with a particular strategy in mind.
You’re on holiday, so it’s okay to spend a little extra, right? What do you think—this menu looks a bit expensive, but not outrageously so, doesn’t it?
That was the message I felt the menu was sending.
Still somewhat skeptical, I ordered the safe bet: fried rice.
As for the Service, I’m Not Quite Sure…
There appeared to be five or six staff members working, but they were gathered together eating.
I got the impression that they might be ethnic Chinese.
Then their serving system became confused, and my dish was taken to another table.
I tried to correct the mistake, but they stubbornly continued toward the other table. In the end, I left it alone.
I figured the people at that table would simply say it wasn’t theirs when it arrived.
Eventually, the dish came back to me, but the attitude I encountered was quite something.
Why mention this? I’ll assess the food in a moment, but before getting to the taste, I feel it is worth addressing the service.
My food did arrive in the end, but there was not a word of apology. The staff merely exchanged glances and kept muttering “AEC” among themselves.
In other words: This is our territory, so these things happen. Let’s just move on. We’ve never apologized to a customer before, so let’s gloss over it.
That was how it came across. They seemed like a group of ethnic Chinese restaurateurs with no sense of embarrassment.
The Food Is Decent
I hadn’t come in with high expectations, so I felt more or less fine about the experience.
The higher your expectations, the greater the disappointment—and the easier it is to get angry. Besides, it seemed rather silly to expect too much from a Chinese restaurant in a tourist area.
I decided that as long as the fried rice tasted good, that would be enough. And it did taste good.
Here’s Hoping Mansaseong Works to Improve Its Service
Mansaseong seems suited to anyone looking for simple, dependable Chinese food in downtown Seogwipo.
It is a place you can visit if you give up on expecting much in the way of service. It is right there, and there are not many better alternatives nearby.
Why post something like this?
If I only introduced restaurants that were delicious, enjoyable and excellent, it might make the merely ordinary places in the world seem as though they did not exist.
I keep travelling, visiting different parts of the world, meeting people and talking with them. Along the way, I record my honest impressions: What is this neighbourhood like? What about that one?
Among the businesses I encounter, some are run with genuine care, while others are run with an arrogant attitude.
I record those experiences so I can point out what to watch for and advise readers to avoid places with those shortcomings next time.
I have no intention of attacking them.
I am simply sharing what I experienced as a customer, exactly as it was.
That said, if the people at Mansaseong read this and make an effort to improve their service, it would be a positive development—for them and for every customer who visits in the future.
Even if they complain to me, I have simply written down what happened, so there is nothing I can do about that. A review is supposed to tell it like it is, isn’t it?
