Overview
The AW159 Wildcat is a state-of-the-art maritime operations helicopter operated by the Republic of Korea Navy. It is a multipurpose helicopter designed for anti-submarine warfare and anti-ship missions. Combining advanced detection and strike capabilities, it serves as a key platform for the Republic of Korea Navy’s anti-submarine operations and fleet defense.
- Key features
- Powerful anti-submarine warfare capabilities: Equipped with advanced sonar and anti-submarine torpedoes
- Anti-ship strike capability: Capable of engaging maritime targets
- Advanced sensors and networking systems: Can operate in coordination with surface ships and maritime patrol aircraft
- A small helicopter with substantial combat capability: Offers improved performance over the Super Lynx

Development Background
As its existing Super Lynx maritime operations helicopters began to age, the Republic of Korea Navy determined that it needed to acquire a next-generation naval helicopter incorporating the latest technology. It subsequently selected the AW159 Wildcat, which has been entering operational service since 2020.
- Development timeline
- Mid-2010s: Next-generation maritime operations helicopter program launched
- 2016: AW159 acquisition finalized
- 2020: Entered operational service with the Republic of Korea Navy
- Today: Conducting anti-submarine warfare and anti-ship missions
Strengths and Weaknesses
🔹 Strengths
✔ Advanced anti-submarine warfare capabilities: Can be equipped with a dipping sonar and anti-submarine torpedoes ✔ Anti-ship support: Capable of attacking maritime targets ✔ Advanced sensor and navigation systems: Precise search and tracking capabilities ✔ Can operate from smaller warships: Suitable for deployment on frigates and destroyers
🔻 Weaknesses
❌ Limited operating range: Shorter endurance and operating range than medium-sized helicopters ❌ Limited payload capacity: Carries less weaponry than larger attack helicopters ❌ High maintenance costs: Advanced electronic systems are expensive to maintain
