Daegu-Class Frigate (FFX-II): A Comparative Analysis

Daegu-Class Frigate (FFX-II): A Comparative Analysis

Overview

The Daegu-class frigate (FFX-II) is a next-generation multipurpose frigate operated by the Republic of Korea Navy. Developed to replace the aging Ulsan- and Incheon-class frigates, it is a medium-sized combatant featuring an advanced stealth design and powerful armament optimized for air-defense, anti-ship and anti-submarine warfare. The class forms a key part of the South Korean navy’s coastal and maritime operations.

  • Key features
    • Stealth design: Improved survivability through a reduced radar cross-section (RCS)
    • Strong anti-submarine capability: Equipped to operate an advanced anti-submarine helicopter and the Hong Sang Eo anti-submarine missile
    • Enhanced air defense: Operates the RAM close-in weapon system and new surface-to-air missiles
    • Compatible with the KDDX: Capable of networked operations alongside next-generation destroyers

Development Background

As the Republic of Korea Navy’s existing Ulsan- and Incheon-class frigates grew outdated, the service determined that it needed a new frigate equipped with modern combat systems. The Daegu class was subsequently designed as the second phase of the FFX program, with the first vessels entering operational service in 2018.

  • Development timeline
    • 2013: Daegu-class design completed
    • 2016: Lead ship Daegu launched
    • 2018: Deployment with the Navy began
    • Today: Additional ships are being built, with ongoing capability upgrades

Strengths and Weaknesses

🔹 Strengths

Modern combat systems: Equipped with advanced radar and electronic-warfare systems ✔ Strong anti-submarine capability: Operates anti-submarine helicopters and Hong Sang Eo anti-submarine missiles ✔ Stealth design: Reduced RCS improves its ability to evade detection ✔ Operational efficiency: Designed for both coastal and blue-water operations

🔻 Weaknesses

Limited firepower compared with larger warships: Carries a lighter weapons load than KDX-class destroyers ❌ Restricted air-defense capability: Lacks long-range surface-to-air missiles such as the SM-2 ❌ Limited top speed: Less capable of carrying out certain high-speed operations
