My last visit to Ujin Haejangguk, which I stopped by as soon as I arrived in Jeju, left me with a few mixed feelings.
Perhaps my palate simply has not caught up with Jeju’s progressive food culture.
So today, I decided to try a different haejangguk restaurant.
Inside Chaehunine Hangover Soup
Once you enter and take a seat, you are asked to choose your dish and pay upfront.
It is not a particularly large restaurant, so this rather mechanical ordering process does not feel especially welcoming. Still, well… I suppose that is how they do things here.
A regular customer says this is a truly Jeju-style spot for haejangguk.
It is my first visit, but that sign has me feeling quite hopeful.
I had a good experience with gosari haejangguk last time, and momguk is another one of Jeju’s equally progressive dishes. It was a little too adventurous for me, though, so I passed and ordered the original haejangguk instead.
The side dishes arrive in a fairly standard lineup. The egg is a reassuring sign that the familiar style of haejangguk is on its way.

Looking around the walls, it would be difficult to compare this place with Daemun-jip from my previous visit, but plenty of notable people have eaten here too.
These signed visitors’ notes are oddly reassuring.
Come to think of it, I do not remember seeing anything like this at Ujin Haejangguk last time.
At last, the haejangguk has arrived.
You can see it, right? There is seonji—congealed blood—as well as bean sprouts and several other ingredients. It is practically announcing, “Here is the haejangguk you have been waiting for.”
Stir in one egg, and it becomes even better.
One taste confirms that it is exactly the flavor I was hoping for.
This is proper haejangguk.
Clean and spicy, with just the right kick—this is the kind of soup that is perfect with rice stirred in.
Chaehunine is exactly the restaurant I had been looking for.
