A Round at Bayside Golf Club in Busan

A Round at Bayside Golf Club in Busan

Round played on June 20, 2026

Located in Gijang County, Busan, Bayside Golf Club (hereafter, Bayside CC) is a premium private-membership golf club regarded as one of South Korea’s finest, not only in the Yeongnam region but nationwide.

Since opening in September 2010, it has been considered a dream course that countless golfers hope to play at least once, thanks to its exceptional location, distinctive course design and strictly managed membership system.

This was my second visit.

I had been hoping to play at least one more round in good weather before summer arrived in earnest, and today turned out to be exactly that kind of day.

1. Prime Location and Exceptional Natural Setting

Bayside CC is located at 100, Icheon 8-gil, Ilgwang-eup, Gijang-gun, Busan.

The club sits on gently rolling hills beside the sea in Ilgwang, Gijang, an emerging center of Busan, and benefits directly from the area’s mild maritime climate throughout the year.

With warm winters and cool summers, it feels like a natural stronghold where golfers can enjoy comfortable play in every season, 365 days a year.

Accessibility

It is also exceptionally easy to reach. The club is directly adjacent to the Gijang Ilgwang Interchange on the Busan–Ulsan Expressway, as well as National Routes 14 and 31.

  • Haeundae area of Busan: Approximately 10–15 minutes by car
  • Ulsan city center and the Gyeongnam area: Reachable within 40 minutes to one hour

This prime location minimizes travel time for golfers coming for business rounds or weekend leisure.

A North–South Layout That Minimizes Glare

One of the most distinctive features of Bayside CC’s design is that all 27 holes are laid out on a north–south axis.

Golfers often find their vision compromised when they have to hit directly into the sun in the early morning or late afternoon, a problem known as glare.

At Bayside CC, however, the terrain was carefully analyzed and every hole aligned north to south. This allows players to have the sun behind them or to one side throughout the round, minimizing glare and letting them focus fully on their game.

2. Analyzing the Three Courses Shaped by Kim Myeong-gil’s Design Philosophy

The course at Bayside CC was created by course architect Kim Myeong-gil, one of South Korea’s leading golf-course designers.

Rather than dramatically reshaping the land, he preserved the original pine groves, valleys and lakes, giving each nine-hole layout a distinct identity and theme.

The 27-hole course, with a par of 108 and a total length of 9,911 meters, is divided into the Park, Lake and Canyon courses. Each offers a completely different visual experience and strategic challenge.

① Park Course: A Peaceful Walk Through Dense Woodland

  • Specifications: 9 holes / Par 36 / 3,279 meters
  • Concept: A classic woodland course and tree-filled retreat

True to its name, the Park Course is enclosed by dense stands of Korean pine and deep green foliage, creating the atmosphere of a leisurely walk through a vast natural park.

Its fairways follow the gentle slopes of the natural terrain and feel comfortably sheltered, making this the most visually tranquil of the three courses.

  • Playing characteristics: The relatively broad, inviting fairways reduce the pressure golfers feel over their tee shots. As you approach the greens, however, long, precisely positioned bunkers threaten to undo a good score. It is an ideal course for enjoying the quiet, contemplative side of golf in harmony with the landscape.

② Lake Course: An Exotic Harmony of Water, Turf and Sand

  • Specifications: 9 holes / Par 36 / 3,364 meters
  • Concept: A waterfront course featuring dramatic beach bunkers

All nine holes on the Lake Course run alongside a large reservoir. The contrast between blue water, green turf and the long stretches of white sand known as beach bunkers creates an exotic and striking visual effect.

  • Playing characteristics: Beautiful enough to make your eyes ache, it is also the most demanding and strategically subtle of the three courses. Nearly every hole requires players either to carry a hazard or to play with water running alongside them, so any loss of accuracy is punished immediately. Wind is another major factor, making careful club selection and control of ball flight essential.

③ Canyon Course: A Valley That Awakens the Spirit of Competition

  • Specifications: 9 holes / Par 36 / 3,268 meters
  • Concept: Valley terrain, stereo-style hole design and pot bunkers

Drawing inspiration from dramatic valleys and rugged terrain, the Canyon Course incorporates stereo-style architecture, an advanced layout technique associated with the world’s top 100 courses.

The elevation changes are pronounced, while the fairways are narrow and dynamically contoured, appealing to golfers who relish a serious challenge.

  • Playing characteristics: Deep, small, jar-shaped pot bunkers, familiar from Scottish links golf, are positioned throughout the course. Once you find one, escaping in a single shot is extremely difficult. Blind holes and alternating downhill and uphill slopes demand precise club selection and decisive judgment on every shot, creating an exhilarating high-risk, high-reward experience.

4. Clubhouse and Distinctive Premium Services

Bayside CC has earned a top-tier reputation in South Korea not only for the quality of its course, but also for the elegance of its clubhouse and the level of its private service.

The clubhouse avoids ostentatious decoration in favor of understated elegance and a modern classic style that blends naturally with its surroundings.

Entering the lobby, visitors are greeted by soaring ceilings and an open void space that creates both a sense of grandeur and openness.

Through the expansive floor-to-ceiling windows, the course unfolds in a fan shape, while the slopes of Dalleumsan rise in the distance, creating a scene reminiscent of an East Asian landscape painting.

Strictly Private, Member-Focused Operations

Bayside CC is a traditional private-membership club with a tightly controlled membership of approximately 690 members.

It is known for strictly limiting reservations for non-members, thereby protecting members’ booking rights even on weekends and during peak season.

  • Dress and etiquette: The club places strong emphasis on the traditions of a classic country club, so dress codes and club etiquette are enforced relatively strictly. For example, guests are encouraged to maintain a neat, presentable appearance when entering the lobby, reflecting the club’s commitment to a refined culture.
  • Locker rooms and sauna: The facilities are designed with circulation routes that fully protect members’ privacy. The sauna, an ideal place to unwind after a round, uses natural groundwater and is known for its excellent water quality.

A Premium Dining Restaurant

The clubhouse restaurant serves fresh seasonal seafood inspired by the waters off Gijang, along with premium Korean and Western set menus.

Private VIP banquet rooms are also available for business meetings and social gatherings before or after a round, offering an elegant dining experience.

5. Golfers’ Firsthand Reviews and Course Conditions

Among golf communities and accomplished players across South Korea, Bayside CC’s reputation can be summed up as that of a “well-crafted golf club with almost no shortcomings.”

  • Tee boxes and fairway conditions: Premium cool-season grasses and Korean turf are planted densely and evenly, producing the ideal sensation of striking a ball that seems to sit just slightly above the grass. The grounds are maintained so meticulously, with crews constantly repairing the turf, that divot marks are difficult to find.
  • Green speed and difficulty: The greens at Bayside CC consistently run at a fast 2.8 to 3.0 meters or more. Their subtle undulations and numerous two- and three-tiered surfaces mean that accurate advice from the caddie and a delicate putting touch can determine the score.
  • Caddies and course management: Veteran caddies with years of experience and professional training provide precise hole-by-hole guidance, information on wind direction based on the north–south layout and detailed reads of the greens, allowing players to focus entirely on their shots.

6. Conclusion: The Golfing Value of Bayside CC

Bayside Golf Club in Gijang, Busan, is more than a leisure facility; it is an almost artistic creation born from the perfect compromise between nature and human craftsmanship.

The naturally advantageous north–south layout of all 27 holes, which minimizes glare; the masterful layout by Kim Myeong-gil, which brings the forests, lakes and valleys to life in three dimensions; and the club’s unwavering commitment to private, member-focused operations all clearly explain why it has established itself as one of the Yeongnam region’s premier clubs.

Overall, the holes are on the challenging side. The fairways have pronounced undulations, with slopes appearing throughout the course. The bunkers also have high faces, making them difficult for beginners to escape.
