Overview
Development Background
The KUH-1 Surion is a multipurpose utility helicopter developed domestically by the Republic of Korea. Operated by the Army and Air Force, it carries out a wide range of missions, including troop transport, medical evacuation, search and rescue, and command and control. The Surion is widely regarded as a flagship achievement of South Korea’s defense industry, and numerous variants have been developed on the same platform.

Development Background
South Korea launched the Surion program to replace aging UH-1H and 500MD airframes while developing the aviation technologies needed to strengthen national defense self-reliance. Development began in 2006, and the helicopter entered operational service in 2013. Since then, it has been adapted into a range of variants for police, firefighting, Marine Corps, and medical evacuation missions.

Future Development
- Improve payload capacity: Develop higher-performance variants in the medium-lift class and above
