Getting to Udo Island: Ferry Guide from Seongsan Port

Getting to Udo Island: Ferry Guide from Seongsan Port

Where to Board the Ferry to Udo Island

Discovering the Ferry Route to Udo, an Island Within Jeju Island

Since Udo Island is located on the eastern side of Jeju Island, most ferries depart from Seongsan Port, situated near the famous Seongsan Sunrise Peak.

When you arrive at Seongsan Port, your first stop is the terminal to purchase ferry tickets.

You’ll need to complete a passenger declaration form before boarding.

It’s recommended to fill out two copies in advance so you won’t need to complete another form when leaving the island.

Ferry Fares – As of November 2025

Passengers (round trip): Approximately 10,000 KRW for adults; 26,000 KRW to transport a vehicle.

Vehicles: Fares vary depending on vehicle type and tonnage, and boarding restrictions may apply.

Ferry Ports and Routes

Jeju Main Island: Seongsan Port, Jongdal Port

Udo Island: Cheonjin Port, Haumu-dong Port (Haumu-dong Harbor)

Important Information for Port Users

ID is Required

Service May Be Suspended or Reduced During Poor Weather

Departure always brings a little excitement to the journey.

Watching Seongsan Port from the ferry deck is quite enjoyable. Most passengers aboard are tourists rather than island residents, and you’ll notice a significant number of Chinese visitors.

In fact, Chinese tourists make up more than half the passengers on many trips.

It’s striking to see just how dominant Chinese tourism has become in Jeju’s visitor numbers.

Travel Time by Ferry

Seongsan Port ↔ Udo Island: Approximately 15 minutes

In reality, the journey takes about 30 minutes when you factor in boarding and disembarking time. While the actual sailing time is roughly 15 minutes, the boarding and exit process adds extra time.

Still, it’s a relatively short trip—short enough that you won’t experience seasickness, and the ferry doesn’t rock too much.

During a previous trip to Yokji Island, I spent about an hour on a similar-sized ferry, and I didn’t experience any motion sickness then either.

Fun Moments During the Crossing

When the ferry departs, a flock of seagulls that have been waiting at Seongsan Port springs into action.

It’s curious why they don’t approach while the boat is docked—instead, they follow once it’s moving.

Perhaps these seagulls are just a bit shy, or maybe they enjoy the thrill of the chase. Either way, they seem to have some arrangement with the ferry operators!

Once the ferry is underway, the shrimp cracker feeding show begins. The challenge is that Jeju’s winds are quite strong, making it difficult for the birds to control their flight and catch the snacks properly.

Still, they persevere in their pursuit. Life’s not easy when you’re a scavenging seagull!

It’s quite entertaining to watch them struggle as you sail across.

Ferry Operating Times from Udo Island (Subject to Seasonal and Weather Changes)

First ferry: 7:30 AM to 8:00 AM

Last ferry: 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM (schedules vary; typically 3:00 PM is the last departure)

During peak season: Ferries depart at 30-minute intervals

When you purchase your ticket, you can exit from either of Udo’s two ports without restriction.

While I considered using the other port, I’ve stuck with Cheonjin Port for my trips.

I noticed that Cheonjin Port and Haumu-dong Port operate on slightly different schedules.

So if you miss a ferry at one port, you could quickly move to the other for a faster departure. Though you might still wait roughly 30 minutes either way.

Geommule Coastal Area is the standard route for most Udo visitors.

Head down toward the shore and you can enjoy motorboat rides, or take a short walk uphill to reach the Lighthouse Viewpoint, which offers spectacular views.

We hope you have a wonderful time exploring Udo Island.

Until next time, this is Lux.
