But does Busan have a rest area surrounded by the sea?
It does—on the highway to Geoje Island,
near the famous undersea tunnel.

This is Gadeok Rest Area, located on the route to the Geoje Island undersea tunnel.
Because drivers enter Busan’s Gangseo District and reach Geoje Island in roughly 20 minutes, there may not seem to be much demand for a rest stop here. It is fair to wonder whether a business like this can thrive.
Yet this rest area has several features that set it apart from others.

Hours: Open year-round (some facilities, including the convenience store, operate unattended 24 hours a day)

Set on a peninsula surrounded by water on three sides, it offers an exceptional ocean view.

Open-front stalls: These shops sell classic rest-area snacks, including hot bars, walnut pastries and rice cakes with sausage.
CU convenience store: An unattended 24-hour system means it is available whenever you need it.
Outdoor Areas and Walking Trails: Photo-Worthy Spots
Stairway to Heaven: A sky staircase extends toward the sea, creating the perfect photo spot for capturing an unforgettable shot to share on social media.
Healing walking trail: A path leads down to the coast below the rest area, making it a pleasant way to stretch your legs and shake off driving fatigue.
Second Floor: Views and Space to Unwind
Could you mistake this place for anything other than a rest area?
The spacious observation deck feels more like an art museum.

Gadeok Rest Area’s biggest distinguishing feature is the Busan–Geoje Link Road Exhibition Hall, located on the premises.
What’s on display: Videos and scale models explain the construction of the Gadeok Undersea Tunnel, the world’s deepest immersed tunnel, built at a depth of 48 meters, along with the engineering behind the Geoga Bridge.
Why it matters: For children, it offers an engaging introduction to the wonders of civil engineering. For adults, it brings home the scale of the extraordinary project beneath the sea that they have just traveled through.

“The most beautiful rest area in the world”: This nickname reflects its geographic setting, with the sea on three sides.
“The sunset hot spot”: The sun setting between the spans of Geoga Bridge is spectacular, drawing photographers and sunset seekers throughout the year.

Toll required: Gadeok Rest Area is located on Geoga-daero, a toll road. Drivers entering from Busan must pass through the Gadeok Tollgate and pay a toll of 10,000 won for a passenger car.
Keep in mind that there is a cost involved if you are making the trip solely to visit the rest area.
How it compares with Geoje Rest Area: Drivers traveling from Geoje toward Busan will find Ocean Blue Geoje Rest Area along the route.
However, Gadeok Rest Area appears to offer a more impressive setting and facilities, as well as a slightly more satisfying overall experience.
Nearby attractions: Combine a visit to the rest area with a Yeondaebong trek on Gadeokdo, the historically significant Japanese military gun emplacements at Oeyangpo, and Jeonggeo Village, known for its colorful murals, and you have the makings of a perfect day trip.
