Harrington Joins European Team as Vice Captain for the 2027 Ryder Cup
Pádraig Harrington, a prominent figure in Irish golf, has been appointed as the vice-captain of the 2027 Ryder Cup European team. According to a statement from the DP World Tour, team captain Luke Donald has selected Harrington as the third vice-captain, following Edoardo Molinari and Francesco Molinari.
The 2027 Ryder Cup will be held at Adare Manor in County Limerick, Ireland. Harrington, who is from Ireland, is expected to contribute to the preparation process of the European team with his extensive tournament experience and understanding of the host location.
Fourth Vice-Captain Role… Possesses both player and captain experience
Harrington is serving as the vice-captain of the European team in the Ryder Cup for the fourth time. He first served as vice-captain at the 2014 Glen Eagles tournament, and also participated in the European team’s leadership at the 2016 Hazeltine and the 2018 Le Golf National tournaments.
Following the COVID-19 pandemic, the 2021 Whistling Straits tournament was postponed by one year. At that event, Donald led the European team as captain. At the time, Harrington was assisted by Donald, who served as one of the vice-captains.
Donald emphasized that, through DP World Tour, Harrington has a strong connection with Irish fans and is a person who has experienced both playing and serving as a vice-captain and captain. It appears that Harrington will not only be involved in strategic reviews and player support, but also play a role in connecting with the host country’s audience and the European team.
Participated as a player six times, contributing to four European victories
Harrington participated in the Ryder Cup six consecutive times, starting with the 1999 Brooklyn event and continuing until 2010. He competed in the 2002, 2004, 2006, and 2010 tournaments, where Europe won, and accumulated a total of 10.5 points.
In his individual career, he has won 3 major tournaments. He achieved his first major victory at The Open in 2007, and defended his title at The Open in 2008. In the same year, he also won the PGA Championship.
Harrington has a connection to the host course. According to Ryder Cup Europe, he won the Irish Open in 2007, which was held at Adare Manor, and two months later, he won The Open.
The Molina brothers and the composition of the European team leadership
Harrington joined the European team management in 2027, following the Italian brothers Edoardo Molinari and Francesco Molinari. Edoardo was appointed as the first vice-captain, and Francesco as the second vice-captain.
Francesco won all 5 matches he played in the 2018 Ryder Cup, contributing to Europe’s victory, and Edoardo has played a role in the Donald era based on his data analysis and game analysis skills. The combination of these three vice-captains, each with different strengths, is expected to be utilized in player management, team formation, and course strategy development.
Europe will attempt to achieve a three-peat victory in the 2027 competition, following its wins in the 2023 Rome and 2025 New York tournaments. Donald will also serve as the captain of the European team for all three competitions.
