Japan Welcomes 3,098,900 Visitors in August 2026

여름철 도쿄를 방문한 외국인 관광객

According to the Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO), 3,098,900 international visitors traveled to Japan in August 2026. Although the monthly total remained above 3 million, it was 9.6% lower than the figure recorded in the same month last year.

The latest figures show that demand for travel to Japan remains strong, while also highlighting uneven recovery rates and travel demand across individual countries and regions.

Why the Figure Fell 9.6% From Last Year

JNTO said demand for trips to Japan continued across a range of markets, including East Asia, Europe, the Americas and Australia, helped by summer vacations and public holidays. Some Southeast Asian markets, however, entered a seasonally slower period for outbound travel.

Reduced flight schedules and cancellations caused by typhoons also contributed to declines in visitors from some countries. Analysts say Japan’s tourism market should be assessed not only by its overall visitor total, but also by air capacity from each source market and prevailing weather conditions.

August Records Set in 14 Markets

Despite the year-on-year decline in total arrivals, 14 markets recorded their highest-ever visitor numbers for the month of August. They included South Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Indonesia, India, the United States, Mexico, France, Italy, Spain, Russia, the Nordic countries and the Middle East.

Italy and Spain also posted their highest-ever monthly visitor totals. The results suggest that Japan’s inbound tourism market is becoming more diversified, with growth spread across Europe, the Americas and Asia rather than concentrated in a handful of countries.

Challenges and Outlook for Japan’s Tourism Industry

Under the Fifth Basic Plan for the Promotion of a Tourism-Oriented Nation, adopted in March 2026, JNTO is pursuing tourism policy goals that include increasing repeat visitors, boosting travel spending and expanding accommodation in regional areas. Going forward, spreading visitors beyond major destinations, extending stays and increasing spending are expected to be key policy priorities alongside visitor numbers.

The August 2026 figures show that Japan’s tourism industry continues to attract large numbers of international visitors, while also underscoring the challenges of a year-on-year decline and widening differences among markets. To sustain its growth, Japan will likely need to stabilize air capacity, build a high-quality tourism ecosystem and tailor its promotional efforts to individual markets.
