Jeju’s Rainbow Coastal Road in Dodu-dong: A Hidden Gem Worth the Visit

Curious about where the name “Rainbow Road” came from, I set out to discover this hidden treasure located in Dodu-dong near Jeju Airport.

The Story Behind Jeju’s Rainbow Coastal Road

Located in Dodu 1-dong, this coastal stretch was originally an unremarkable expanse of gray concrete sea walls designed to prevent vehicles from plunging into the ocean. What transformed it into the Instagram sensation it is today was a simple but brilliant idea from local residents: why not add a splash of color to brighten up the view?

Working with their own hands, residents painted the walls in vibrant rainbow hues—bright reds, oranges, yellows, and more. Almost overnight, this ordinary stretch of coastal road became a viral hotspot for picture-perfect moments. The bold primary colors create stunning contrast against Jeju’s azure waters, turning even casual snapshots into gallery-worthy shots. What was once just a functional barrier has now become an iconic Jeju landmark.

It’s remarkable how Jeju has this unique charm: items that barely turn heads elsewhere suddenly become must-see attractions here.

Parking and Visitor Tips for the Rainbow Road

There are no dedicated parking lots here—and that’s because this is an actual public road, not an officially designated tourist site. It’s an unexpected hotspot that sprang up organically.

Parking Information: Free parking is available along the roadsides where painted lines designate spaces, but spots are often hard to find due to limited space. If the roadside is full, consider parking at the nearby Dodu Peak parking area or the Dodu Harbor public parking lot, then take a leisurely walk back to the road.

Best Times to Visit: The rainbow colors are vivid and beautiful in bright daylight, but the atmosphere transforms entirely during sunset, when warm golden light bathes the scene. At night, illumination brings out a romantic ambiance you won’t find during the day. Mornings are also popular—many locals jog along this coastal route, a habit common among international visitors too.

Picture-Perfect Moments

The classic shot is to sit or stand on the wall with the ocean as your backdrop. These days, visitors love posing with a playful twist alongside the sculptures tucked between wall sections—haenyeo (diving women) statues and figures of young fishermen—for witty, creative photos.

Connecting with Dodu Peak’s “Kisses Zone”

At the far end of the coastal road sits Dodu Peak, a gentle forested rise. Near its summit is a wooden tunnel structure that locals call the “Kisses Zone” because it resembles the shape of a Hershey’s Kiss. After strolling along the rainbow road, climb up to Dodu Peak to take in panoramic views of the airport runway and the sea in one sweeping glance. I combined both during my visit, and they’re practically next to each other—walking distance apart.

Access points along the coastal wall for local sea activities

The photo above shows a section where stairs descend from the wall directly into the sea. While this is indeed an ordinary public road rather than a formal tourist attraction, it remains the daily lifeline of local residents. The haenyeo (traditional female divers) need proper access points to the water, so basic infrastructure for their livelihoods must be maintained.

Nearby Cafés and Restaurants Guide

There are several excellent dining and café options in the area.

Café Namo Namo: This four-story artisan bakery café boasts rooftop seating with breathtaking views of the rainbow road and ocean below. Their signature rainbow cake perfectly complements the roadway’s theme.

Dodu Haenyeo’s House: A local favorite known for fresh abalone porridge and sliced raw fish soup. It opens early, making it ideal for breakfast.

Yesodam Dodu Branch: Specializing in gogi guksu, a beloved Jeju comfort food of noodles in savory beef broth. The deep, rich flavor here is exceptional.

A Few Words of Caution for Visitors

As mentioned at the outset, this is genuinely a working road with active vehicle traffic. When visitors get absorbed in photographing, they sometimes jaywalk or drift dangerously close to traffic lanes. Safety must come first.

Always be aware of oncoming vehicles. Avoid crossing illegally and instead take your time enjoying a leisurely stroll while snapping photos. This way, you’ll create wonderful memories safely, doubling your enjoyment of the experience.

Dodu-dong’s Rainbow Coastal Road delivers an instant “I’m in Jeju” feeling with just a short walk. It was actually my first stop on my own Jeju trip. Even the sound of aircraft takeoffs and landings from the nearby airport somehow adds to the traveler’s sense of excitement and adventure.

While it might seem like just another road at first glance, there’s genuine magic here. I highly recommend a visit—you’ll leave with memories that exceed your expectations.
